Begin with what you notice
A poem often communicates through sound, images, and suggestions as well as direct statements. Read it once for the overall impression, then again slowly. Notice repeated words, surprising images, and changes in tone.
Identify the speaker. The speaker of a poem is not automatically the poet. Ask who seems to be speaking, to whom, and in what situation.
Write down one observation and the words that support it. This habit turns a general feeling into a useful interpretation.
Start with the words on the page. Support interpretations with evidence.
