Follow the seasonal movement of pressure, winds and rainfall across the subcontinent.

Climate of India: lesson notes

The Indian monsoon is a seasonal reversal of winds driven by unequal heating of land and sea.

During summer, low pressure develops over northern India. Moisture-laden winds move in from the Indian Ocean and divide into the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal branches.

Relief features such as the Western Ghats and the Himalayas shape where rain falls and protect the subcontinent from cold northern winds.
